Susan Pruyn King of Brewster passed away peacefully surrounded by her husband, daughter and whippet, Mulberry on Saturday January 8, 2023, at the age of 80. Susan suffered a long illness and fought with positivity and grace. She was born in New York City and resided in Sharon, CT. Susan was predeceased by her father Edward Lansing Pruyn, mother, Gladys Erickson, brother Edward Lansing Pruyn Jr and her half-sister, Cynthia Pruyn. Susan is survived by her husband, Thomas I King and her loving daughter Kirsten M King along with numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Susan lost both of her parents at a very young age and was welcomed into the family of Frank Wells McCabe, his wife Mary Lee, and daughters Polly, Tinker and Martha. Susan resided with them in Rensselaer, NY and both Tom and Kirsten felt included in their home.
Susan was a graduate of Stoneleigh-Burnham School in Greenfield, MA and then went on to earn her bachelor's degree from Santa Clara University. While attending Santa Clara, Susan met the man that became her husband of nearly fifty six years. Susan and Tom were married in Sharon, CT and lived in Marin County, CA prior moving to Saratoga Springs, NY. Susan was involved in St. Clements Parish and School, Hospice, and spent a great deal of time with her numerous animals and showing her dogs.
Susan then moved to Long Lake, NY where she was an active member in St. Henry’s Parish, enjoyed kayaking, hiking in the woods and frequently visiting Santanoni Preserve in Newcomb, sharing her youngest childhood memories.
Susan made her last move to Brewster, Cape Cod and was warmly greeted by Our Lady of the Cape Parish, where Susan became a Eucharistic Minister, was involved in the prayer shawl ministry, volunteered for Loaves and Fishes and was a member of the parish council. Although Susan was no longer able to attend Mass weekly in person due to her stroke, she watched virtually every Sunday with Tom by her side. Susan also enjoyed volunteering at The Natural History Museum and Wild Care.
Our family is grateful to Cape Cod Health Care, the staff and aides of Bayada and the VNA on Cape Cod/Hospice. We feel blessed to have had the support of Our Lady of the Cape Parish, especially in the past few weeks as Susan began to make her final journey.
