William James McElhaney Jr.

William James McElhaney, Jr., 84, of Dennis, MA died Saturday, March 9, 2019 with his family by his side. He was the loving husband of 60 years to Helen Ann (Rich) McElhaney.
Bill was born and raised in Corning, NY, the son of the late William James and Agnes Rose (McGovern) McElhaney. He was a graduate of Northside High School (’53) and Clarkson University (’57), where he met his future wife Helen Ann and married in 1958. Bill and Helen Ann raised their family in Harvard, MA.
Bill held regional sales management roles with the global industrial manufacturer Ingersoll Rand for over 40 years. He worked out of their Chicago, Boston, Charlotte and Los Angeles offices until his retirement in 1999. In 2001, Bill and Helen Ann moved to Dennis, MA. Bill enjoyed gardening, bowling, golfing, fishing, hosting new and lifelong friends and traveling to Italy, Ireland, Alaska and South America. Bill also donated his time and talents to various organizations. He was Past President of the Cape Cod Men’s Club, member of the Retired Men’s Club of Cape Cod, the Dennis Capital Outlay Committee as well as a board member of Supporters of the Dennis Council on Aging (DCOA). He was an active parishioner at Our Lady of the Cape in Brewster.
In addition to his wife Helen Ann, Bill is survived by his children Margaret “Meg” (Kevin) Hartwell of Ashland, MA; Michael Patrick (Susan) McElhaney of Natick, MA; and William James (Chris, deceased) McElhaney III of Falmouth, MA; his sisters Jane Walsh of East Greenwich, RI, Anne Stanton of Euless, TX; Agnes Way of Port Townsend, WA; the late Mary McElhaney of Pocasset, MA; and his grandchildren; Jaimie Hartwell, Nolan McElhaney, Kyle McElhaney and Shane McElhaney.
Visiting hours will be held on Monday, March 18, 2019 from 4-7 p.m. at Doane, Beal & Ames, 729 Route 134, South Dennis, MA 02660. A Funeral Mass will take place 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 19th at Our Lady of the Cape, 468 Stony Brook Rd, Brewster, MA 02631. Burial will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery, South Dennis.

My deepest condolences to Helen Ann, Mike, and all of Bill's family.
Bill was my first boss after leaving the Army in 1991. I knew virtualy nothing of corporate America and thanks to his mentorship and guidance it was a great introduction. I started as an Applications Engineer in the Los Angeles office of Ingersoll-Rand and he and Jay Welu really helped my transition to the civilian world.
It's hard to put into words the tremendous impact he's had on me in my professional career. Bill was a one-of-a-kind boss, the kind you never forget because he made you want to do the best you could for him. He believed in and acted on the philosophy that a leader's job was to do everything they could to knock down hurdles and give you the tools you needed to be successful. And he did this with graciousness, a positive outlook, and great sense of humor. Fundamentally, he believed in you. When you needed correction, as we all do, it was in private and with kindness. Bill was and will continue to be a huge influence on me.

Bill has been a great friend since high school. We treasure the many memories we have shared with Bill and Helen Ann over the years in CA, NC, MA, AZ, Corning, Keuka Lake, and Alaska. Rafting with them on the Mendenhall Glacier is a fond memory! He lives on in our hearts.

Heaven gained an angel. Such a wonderful husband, father, and “Grampy”. My boys will always treasure their time spent with him. Whether it be fishing on the cape, playing monopoly or bocce ball in the yard, candlestick bowling, or having Grampy cheering at sporting events, he made the boys feel important and loved. He was the only grandfather figure for almost all the boys’ lives and he excelled in that job and filled the void left by my dad’s passing. Precious memories will get us all through this difficult time. We are comforted by the fact that he enjoyed life to the absolute fullest and was surrounded by love, laughter, and friendship his entire life. He will be greatly missed. Rest In Peace Bill.
