I  had the honor of being Edgar's Braille teacher for about 2 years. Edgar was always so enthusiastic and ready to learn. Even on days when he wasn't feeling his best, he always had a big smile on his face and a family story to share. Edgar had the biggest heart of anyone that I have ever known.  He would tell me all about his mom helping with his cousins at home, his dad working so hard to make sure their family as doing well, his sister's travels, and the times he would spend with his brother. It wasn't hard to see that family meant everything to Edgar. He loved his little cousin, and he would often show me pictures of her that his mom had texted him during the school day.  Edgar was so appreciative of everything that his family provided for him. He never took it for granted. Although I was teaching Edgar Braille, I think he taught me more than he will ever know. He taught me to never take the ones I love for granted and to always be kind. He was the one who would always remind me to not forget my jacket in the room we were working in or the one bringing me chocolate that he got in class because he didn't like sweets. Edgar was and forever will be an angel. He cared so much for others, and I am sure that he will forever be looking down and protecting his family. Edgar will always be in our hearts and forever missed. Edgar, thank you for being the best student I could ask for.

A True Hero:

During the months of COVID-19, we hear much of “heroes” who serve our sick patients. They are indeed heroes.

However, Edgar further defines for us another type of hero, as one who has battled formidable disease with undaunted courage.

From the onset of his pituitary disease that ultimately left him blind and thwarted in growth, Edgar continued to grow as an amazing human being with a vision of the spirit that far surpasses the physically sighted.  

Despite these formidable challenges, Edgar courageously battled myelodysplasia, invasive pulmonary aspergillosis, and HLH with the hope of reaching a stem cell transplant.
Our hero envisioned ultimately teaching Braille to blind children in order that they too could one day be heroes.

Edgar, we thank you for teaching us these powerful lessons of heroism, courage, and vision, which will enable us to care for those children who will follow you.

We miss you. You will always live in our hearts.

It was truly an honor and privilege to care for Edgar. He had one of the most beautiful smiles and an even more beautiful heart. I loved visiting him after his shower, watching his mom comb and style his hair, and spraying on his special cologne. He proudly told me that he wanted to be a braille teacher so he could teach kids like him to read braille. He was truly an angel on Earth 😇 and I was lucky to have known him the short time I did. He left a lasting impression on me and I miss him so very much 💜

Good Evening The Limas. First let me send my deepest condolences to you and your family. I met Edgar at Lindbergh Elementary. He had just started back to school and it was my first assignment as an instructional assistant. I was placed in Edgar class in was drawn to him immediately. One day I was watching Edgar outside and we were talking about life. I asked him what he wanted to be when he got older. He replied with I want to be a doctor so I can save lives like my doctor saved mine. I will always remember Edgar smile and happy about life. Thank you for giving us the chance to experience his life.
