

Arthur William Russell, 87, a life-long Philadelphia resident went to be with the Lord on September 28, 2013. His passions were music, service to God and his family. He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II and retired as Vice President of Administration at Betz Entec, Inc. in 1989. He is best known for his musical accomplishments as pianist, organist, choir director and song leader. Mr. Russell organized a 1,000-voice choir at the Leighton Ford Crusade of Philadelphia (1971), was Music Chairman of the Presbyterian Sunday School Superintendent Assoc. of Phila. and Presbyterian Lay Cttee. Conventions at Grove City College, and has led music for state and International Christian Endeavor functions. He organized and conducted the Sacred Sounds Chorus and Orchestra who performed to God’s glory over several decades, has participated and played for many trios and quartets, and encouraged young people such as the Unchanging Truth and CE choir by booking concerts and offering support. Until his death he continued to direct the vesper choir at Southampton Estates. He was known as “Mr. Olivet-Covenant” at his church where he attended and lovingly served throughout his lifetime. Every summer included trips to Cape May, baseball, and watching the Phillies. He was beloved husband to the late Gladys (nee Letteer), devoted father of Janet (David) Wenker and David (Lori) Russell, loving grandfather of Micah (Rachel) and Andrew (Samantha) Wenker, Matthew (Kelli), Jonathan (Rebecca), Krystal (Justin Wrigley), and Michael (Tori) Russell and 9 great grandchildren, and dear brother of Jean Mulvaney.
Services will be held Sunday, October 6, 2013 at 3 pm at Olivet-Covenant Pres. Church, 22nd & Mt. Vernon Sts., Phila, Visitation with family from 1:30 – 3 pm. Memorial gifts can be made to the church. Private burial.
