She was born in Philadelphia, PA on July 6, 1919 to parents George and Martha (Kohler) Popelish.
Gloris married the love of her life John Shimkus Jr. on June 7, 1941, and that is when their adventures began. They traveled the United States together before settling down to start their family. This trip gave them many stories to share that are still repeated today, including how she spent 6 months in a body cast after an accident in Arizona. They spent the next 36 years together growing their family before his death in 1977.
Gloris shared her creativity through artwork over the years using a variety of mediums to show her vast talent. Many of her travels ended with paintings that captured the memories of that trip that are displayed on her family members’ walls today. Gloris read constantly, newspapers, magazines and books of any and all topics that she could get her hands on. She was always ready to learn something new, even impressing many with her interest in computers when she was in her 80's.
Gloris was a true friend. She was always there to listen, to share her many years of wisdom in useful advise and lend a helping hand whenever needed.
Gloris will be greatly missed by her children; John Shimkus III (Sue), Patricia Hunt (Glenn), and Gloris Franzinelli (Jim); her grandchildren Rhonda Keller (Brad), Faith Bombardier (Norm) Hillary McEwan (Shawn), Joe Verdeur (Lisa), John Shimkus IV, Christopher Shimkus, Chase Shimkus and Hunter Shimkus and her great-grandchildren Carrie Piaggi, Katelyn Piaggi, Brenden Piaggi, Nick Keller, Ryan Bumm, Ben McEwan, Lily McEwan and Matthew Powers. She is preceded in death by her parents and brother Leonard Popelish.
