Betty J. Schreiner

Betty was born February 15, 1945, daughter of the late Maurice "Teddy" and Mary Jackson. Against all odds and expectations of her time, she attended Goldey Beacom College on a scholarship where she earned her Associates Degree. During that time she worked to make ends meet by installing TVs in local hospitals. As a professional, she worked for DuPont for 24 years as a highly valued Executive Secretary and took extreme pride in her work. In 1998, following a particularly difficult surgery, she was forced to go on medical disability. During this time she poured her passion into sewing. She learned to make bedspreads, window treatments, children’s clothing and even a beautiful and intricately detailed christening gown. Betty had a love for the beach, the ocean, for fishing, crabbing and boating. She and her husband, Ron, vacationed to Aruba more than 20 times and enjoyed meeting up with the same friends year after year. In 2015 they moved to their dream home in Southport, North Carolina where they have enjoyed living close to the ocean and have made many new and treasured friends. Betty will be remembered as an exceptionally sweet and kind woman with a love for shopping and a passion for spending time with those she loved. Those of us who knew her best and provoked her by not meeting her expectations, also got to know her feisty side, and often heard her say that dynamite comes in small packages.

Betty is survived by her husband, Ronald M. Schreiner; three children, Deborah W. Peckham and husband David, Carol L. McMurrough and husband Michael, and Curtis B. Wetzel and wife Amanda; 10 grandchildren, Abby McDowall, LeeAnn McDowall, Tyler Peckham, Matthew McMurrough, Connor McMurrough, Tracy Salyer, Rebecca Salyer, Zachary Litzinger, Jackson Wetzel, and Avery Wetzel.

Betty was preceded in death by a daughter, Denise Hughes; a grandson, Ryan McMurrough; and a sister, Carole Benningfield.

A celebration of her life will be held at a later date.
