Brandon Matthews, a devoted husband, loving father, cherished son, and an avid fisherman, passed away unexpectedly on May 30th at the age of 49. His loss has left a deep and painful void in the lives of all who knew him.
Born on September 30th in Wilmington, his love for family, the outdoors, cooking, gardening and fishing was unwavering. He had a gift for conversation — whether he was in line at the store, fishing, or meeting someone for the very first time, he could talk to anyone. He spent endless hours with his friends reminiscing and sharing fishing stories.
Fishing was his sanctuary, becoming a Captain at the age of 22. The water was where he found peace, joy, and a sense of connection to the world around him. He loved sharing that passion with family and friends, teaching his children the patience and wonder that comes with waiting for a bite.
As a husband, he was unwavering in his love and devotion to his wife of 19 years, Kerry. Together, they built a life filled with laughter, partnership, and deep affection. As a father, he was present, playful, and endlessly loving — the kind of dad who showed up, who listened, who made ordinary days feel special. His children, Evan and Ella, will carry his kindness, humor, and adventurous spirit with them always.
He was also a beloved son, whose loyalty and love for his family ran deep. His parents, Dwan and Lynn, will forever remember his big heart, his generosity, and the pride he took in being their son.
He is survived by his wife, Kerry; his children, Evan and Ella; and his parents, Dwan and Lynn Matthews. He is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and in laws who loved him dearly. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Rudolph and Ludie Matthews, and his maternal grandmother, Ruth Harrington.
A service to honor his life will be held on Wednesday, June 3, 2026 at Southport Baptist Church. There will be a visitation from 1pm – 2pm followed by a service at 2pm. Friends and loved ones are invited to gather, share stories, and celebrate the remarkable man he was following the service at the CMC building.
His absence is immeasurable, but so is the love he leaves behind. Fish Hard, Weigh Heavy!
