Christine Joan Toland

Christine grew up in Yonkers, New York. She later worked at the Richard Merrill Hicks - Attorney at Law, often speaking about her daily train commute to Manhattan and the view of the Chrysler Building from work.

In 1964, she married Paul Toland who served in Korea in the US Army and then became a police officer in Scarsdale, New York. Together they raised their son Michael, who proudly served in the United States Marines. Christine and Paul left New York and followed her favorite relative and lifelong best friend Colleen Galligan to North Carolina.

Chris led a very independent life. She was a strong supporter of animals who adopted and spoiled several cats. She also previously sponsored many animal organizations. She was active in her church, Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Southport and loved to play bingo and have dinner with her church friends after mass. Chris was a long time volunteer at Dosher Hospital. She also had an interest in real estate, and she volunteered time at Coldwell Banker Seacoast Advantage. She loved the entire staff who became her second family.

Christine is predeceased by both her husband and son, but leaves behind her loving nephew, Brian Long (Patty) and devoted friends, Ginger Harper and Marybeth Johnson, who are more like family.

For the last year, Chris has needed the support of her nephew, his wife, friends, neighbors and the caring hands at both Liberty Healthcare and Terra Bella Assisted Living Community. The family would like to thank all those who had a role in assisting Chris and our family. Especially Ginger and Marybeth for their daily interaction and unwavering support and friendship. We would also like to acknowledge Tasha and Amanda, fondly known as “Bam Bam,” for their outstanding care and understanding for Chris during her stay at Terra Bella, as well as Jean and Rob Debatcher and The Knights of Columbus for their continuous assistance.

Chris was a smart, reverent, feisty, woman with a heart of gold. She will be missed dearly.

A Funeral Mass will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 5269 Dosher Cutoff SE, Southport, NC 28461 on August 4, 2026 at 11:00am, followed by a reception in the church social hall.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests a contribution be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital at www.stjude.com or to a local animal rescue of your choice.
