Born January 25, 1932 in Winnabow, North Carolina, she was the daughter of Sylvanus and Lucy Purvis. She was married to Afton Wescott Smith, who preceded her on April 21, 2015.
Surviving is her son, Raymond Smith; her granddaughter, Rachel May; her great-granddaughter, Ivy May; her brother, Albert C. Purvis and his wife, Virginia; along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her sister, Ethel Purvis.
She retired from BB&T after a 35 year career in the banking sector. Edythe had been an active member of the community, enjoying her work with her fellow faithful at Southport Baptist Church and Southport Presbyterian Church. She was very active in the Eastern Star. She is also remembered as a wonderful cook who loved to provide meals for others.
A celebration of her life will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, January 18, 2025 at Southport Presbyterian Church.
