Mr. Doane was born April 10, 1934, son of the late Clarence E. and Hilda McCready Doane. He graduated from the University of Maryland in 1956 and set off to join the United States Army and was stationed at Fort Jackson in South Carolina. After his stint in the Army, Mr. Doane started teaching and coaching in Maryland where he did so for 30 years. This is where he earned the affectionate nickname “Coach” by all his students who loved him and learned so much from his coaching, as well as instilling many values to his athletes. He tried to teach them to be very optimistic and always make the right choices on the court, as well as in life. Coach had a passion for not only one sport, but many, including basketball, golf, and football. After retirement in Maryland, he moved to Southport in 1986 and began another teacher/coaching position at South Brunswick High School. He continued there until 1995, when he was asked to start a basketball program at Brunswick Community College in Bolivia. After that was established, Coach returned to South Brunswick High School in 2000 and worked until retirement in 2010. Coaching was not his only interest; he enjoyed building model WWII airplanes with his treasured granddaughter Carly. Mr. Doane was preceded in death by his sister Mary Jane Russell.
Leaving to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of 20 years, Linda Doane of Boiling Spring Lakes; sons, Russell Doane of Maryland, Dale Doane and wife Margaret of Maryland, and Jeff Johnson and wife Tasha of Boiling Spring Lakes; daughters, Deborah Manoll and husband Roy of Georgia and Cheri Carmichael and husband Walter of Boiling Spring Lakes; brother, Jack Doane and wife Barbara of Alabama; ten grandchildren; and his special canine companion, Bella.
