George Getzen "Buck" Mathews, Jr.

George Getzen Mathews, Jr. (”Buck”) was born October 31, 1929, in Scotland County, North Carolina to the late George Getzen and Hattie Gibson. He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Helen Mathews; two sisters, Hettie Bet Stubbs and Martie Odom; and a brother, Jack Mathews.

George attended Laurel Hill High School. He joined the Navy in 1950 and served four years, with several trips overseas during the Korean War. After discharge, George attended North Carolina State University for four years where he graduated with honors. In July 1955, George married his best friend and the love of his life, Helen McNeill Mathews. They made marriage look easy. George retired from Southern Bell on November 1, 1987 to pursue his favorite pass times, spending time with his wife, Helen and fishing.

George was a devoted husband and father; he had many talents, just one of which was woodworking. He brought smiles to others up until the day he went on to be with the Lord. He was a dedicated Christian and an active member of the Oak Island Evangelical Presbyterian Church for more than 45 years.

Survivors include his two children, Pam Rowell and husband Dennis, and George "Mat" Mathews; two grandsons, Jason Mathews and Jarod Mathews; five great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter as well as a host of nieces, nephews and friends to cherish his memory.

A service celebrating the lives of George and Helen Mathews will be held at the Oak Island Evangelical Presbyterian Church on Saturday, May 4, 2024 at 2pm. A graveside service will be held the following Saturday, May 11, 2024 at 11am in Laurinburg at the Old Hillside Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Oak Island Evangelical Presbyterian Church or Hospice.
