

Jim was born in Chicago, IL on December 18, 1938 to the late John Louis and Rose Charlotte Macha Prell. After graduating from Bradley University with a BS in electrical engineering, Jim served for several years aboard the USS Independence as a tech rep supporting radar for the Phantom jetfighter. He worked for IBM for three years, then accepted a position with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, working with security issues and power plants. He retired in 1996 and moved to St. James Plantation, Southport, NC. While in Southport, Jim served for nine years in the St. James Fire Department, had a great passion for tutoring math students at the Brunswick County Academy, and was on the St. Peter Lutheran Church Council for several years. He was an accomplished woodcarver and avid golfer, who enjoyed ping pong, bridge, and many outdoor activities.
Surviving are his loving wife of fifty years, Jackie Prell; three loving children, Janet Prell Anderson and husband John of Evergreen, CO, Christina Lynn Prell and husband Klaus Hubacek of Hyattsville, MD, and Mary Elizabeth Catrette of South Riding, VA; a sister, Lois Yoerger and husband Rick of Marion, IA; grandchildren, Curran Allen Anderson, John Grayson Anderson, Sophia Rose Prell, Lukas Finn Prell; and niece, Stephanie Yoerger and nephew, Adam Yoerger.
A memorial service will be conducted at eleven o’clock in the morning on Saturday, January 28, 2017 at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Southport, NC.
In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests with gratitude that monetary donations be made in his name to the St. Peter Lutheran Church Mission Endowment Fund at 4843 Southport-Supply Road, Southport, NC, 28461 or to the Lower Cape Fear Hospice, “Brunswick House”, 955 Mercy Lane, Bolivia, NC 28422.
