Judy was born September 18, 1957 in Detroit to the late Daniel and Mildred Bowen. She was a loving and dedicated wife and mother. She grew up in Grosse Pointe City, graduated from Grosse Pointe South High School, and was a graduate of Northwestern University with a BA in Business.
Judy was passionate about her faith and her family. Throughout her life she become a Stephen Minister, was a Bible Study Fellowship leader, played hand bells and sang in the church choir, was a Sunday School teacher, was a lay delegate to annual conference and sat on numerous church committees. She contributed to her church’s advent and lent devotionals and led several small group studies.
Prior to children she was a buyer, budget analyst, and computer programmer for ANR Pipeline Company in Detroit. She liked downhill skiing where she met her husband and together, they played on a corporate volleyball team. She left the corporate world to become a full-time mother and volunteer. She was a tireless homemaker and church volunteer. She volunteered for many school functions with her children and enjoyed camping with her family on scout outings. She led the religious study for Pack and Troop 202 and she was instrumental in numerous scouts obtaining the rare Four-Star religious award, something less than 1% of scouts achieve.
Judy loved the water, crossword puzzles, giving hugs, and butterflies. She spent hours on the boat dock with her dog Skipper doing crosswords, studying her bible and communing with her God.
Judy was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2014 and fought a valiant fight for seven years. Despite surgeries, chemo treatments, hair loss, and all the side effects of treatment, she never lost her smile, her gratitude for care givers, and that internal warrior mentality to survive for her family. She kept her humor throughout her treatment, dryly replying to a question of whether a scar was above or below her belly button that she didn’t know as she no longer possessed a belly button. She loved the butterflies painted on the walls at the UNC Chapel Hill cancer treatment center and adopted the butterfly as her symbol of hope for emergence from her cancer treatment cocoon.
Judy is survived by her husband, Sam Andrus; a daughter, Catherine "Catie" Andrus; a son, Jameson Andrus; her identical twin sister, Ginger Bowen and husband Bill Craft; and a brother, Jim Bowen and wife Maureen. She was preceded in death by a brother, Daniel Warner Bowen.
A celebration of her life will be held at 3:00 pm on Saturday, February 13, 2021 in the Peacock - Newnam & White Funeral Home Chapel and can be viewed via their Facebook Live page.
