Unmasking the Mellifluous Man: A Funeral, a Lie, and the Silence That Will Forever Follows


It’s hard to believe it’s been two years since I lost my mother.
 But I still don’t know what was worse—losing her… or losing my entire family that same day.

I was told she was very sick. “She’s awake”  he said, “but not that bad, she’s not going to die.”
 Lies, just convincing enough to keep me away.

Instead of being by her side—holding her hand, comforting her—I was told not to come.
 Warned that if my wife and I did come, we wouldn’t be allowed into the hospital.
 Shut out. Barred from saying goodbye.

And no one offered a reason. Not one person explained what I had done to deserve that cruelty.

After 44 years on this earth—and 34 years of knowing this small, bitter, contemptible little man—I finally saw what he truly thought of his wife’s youngest son.
 Decades of cold silence, finally exposed in one merciless moment.

Days later, I got a call. No warmth. Just:
 “Say your goodbyes to your mother. I’ll hold the phone to her ear.”
 I asked, “Will she even hear me?”
 His answer, flat and inhuman: “I don’t know.”

That was it. My last moment with her—over the phone, through him, or so I was told.

And then came the funeral.
 A Jewish woman. Daughter of Holocaust survivors.
 Given a Christian service.
 A small menorah tucked behind towering crucifixes.

Two years since her identity—her truth—was erased to make others more comfortable.
 They called it a funeral.
 I call it a betrayal.

But I am stronger now. Because in that pain, clarity rose.

One so-called “family” showed me what I meant to them.
 But one real family member showed me something else:

She stood by me. She saw me. She loved my mother the way she deserved.

She’s not just my relative.
 She’s the daughter I never had the chance to have.

And that truth—that light—is the only thing I need to carry forward.

Judy was an avid member of the Indigo Mermaids which is a water aerobics class. She frequently made us laugh with her jokes and her Jersey girl trash talk. We certainly will miss her.
