

Dale was born August 28, 1950 in Southport, son of the late Julian L. and Lucy Sellers Southerland. He worked for Brunswick Town for 15 years before working 20 years as a commercial fisherman aboard “The Skipper” where he received his high school diploma on it’s bow. He retired from Wilmington Cape Fear Pilots after 28 years of service in various positions. Dale loved Southport Fire Department and retired as Lieutenant after 33 years. He was also an active deacon at Southport Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife of 14 years, Jacqueline “Jackie” Southerland of Southport; brother, Mark Southerland and wife Amy of Southport; sister, Ann Worley and husband Gary of Longs, SC; nieces, Kimberly Trecek, Kristel Wallace, Charleston Southerland, April Neitzey, Kelly Neitzey, Michelle Gallahan, and Marjorie Gallahan; nephews, Mike Worley and Michael Gallahan; great nieces, Autumn Trecek, Kelsea Trecek, Rylea Stow, and Melanie Stow; great nephew, Nolan Stow; sisters-in-law, Alice Neitzey and Mildred Gallahan; brother-in-law, William C. Neitzey; special friend, Michele Royal, canine companion Roxie Rose Southerland; and numerous cousins in Brunswick County.
Funeral services will be 2:00pm Wednesday, April 12, 2017 at Southport Baptist Church. Burial will follow with Fireman Honors in Northwood Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00pm Tuesday, April 11, 2017 at Southport Baptist Church Chapel.
Pallbearers will be Southport Fire Department. Honorary pallbearers will be Southport Baptist Church Deacons and Wilmington Cape Fear Pilots.
