A combined Celebration of Life Service for family and close friends of Barbara and Monte McMichael will be held on Saturday, November 6, 2021 at the Woodlands Park Amphitheater and Pavilion in St. James, Southport, NC from 3:00pm to 7:00pm.
Barbara Lorraine McMichael, age 84, of St James, NC passed away peacefully at home on March 28, 2020. Barbara was born in Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1936 to the late Gabriel and Vivian Popp. She was preceded in death by a sister, Darlene, two surviving brothers, Bruce and Scott, and a surviving sister, Markay. Upon retiring to Southport, Barbara’s activities included dancing, bowling, socializing, water skiing, but her very favorite sport was tennis. Barbara started playing Tennis in High School and played virtually every day until the last year of her life. She played competitive doubles with her dear friend, Martha Reese and traveled the east coast playing in tournaments. If she wasn’t playing tennis, she was watching it on TV or traveling with her friends to watch the pros play . LaMonte Dale McMichael, 85, passed away peacefully on July 9th in Ashburn, VA. Monte had recently moved back to No. Virginia from Southport, NC to be near his family after the passing of his beloved wife, Barbara. They were married for 62 years.
Monte was born to Mac and Helen McMichael on November 1, 1935 in Benton Harbor, Michigan. He is survived by one brother, Donny. He attended the University of New Mexico where he met and married Barbara L. Popp. With the Bureau of Indian Affairs, he embarked on a career with the which led to a move to Vienna, VA in 1971 with his family to continue working for the BIA in Washington DC. Upon retiring, Monte worked as a realtor in Northern Virginia before retiring permanently to Southport, NC in 1999. Monte’s passions included camping, tennis, bowling, boating, coaching both Little League baseball and basketball. In 1987, he obtained his private pilot license which became a hobby that enabled him to fly his family on vacations from Virginia to New Mexico. He also loved playing the saxophone and clarinet with his band members for events in his community of Southport . Monte and Barbara are survived by their two sons, Kevin (Dora Lee), Cary (Rachel) and adoring grandchildren, Jamie, Aaron, Chad (Lourdes), Brandon (Aislinn) and Jacob In lieu of flowers and on behalf of Monte, the family requests that memorial donations be made Brunswick Bands Inc.
