Mr. Welch was born May 29, 1933 in Asheville, NC to the late Wilbur Byron Welch and Mary Louise Skinner Welch. Larry had worked as a structural engineer for McDonald Douglas and later Boeing for 29 years. He was very proud of the fact that at the end of his career his final project was working on a reusable rocket launch vehicle, officially making him a rocket scientist. He was a graduate of the University of Alabama - Tuscaloosa. Larry was an enthusiastic sailor and had been a member of the Cape Fear Yacht Club and the Southport Sail & Power Squadron. Mr. Welch was a member of FOIL, Friends of Oak Island Lighthouse, and was a tour guide at the lighthouse for several years. Over the years, Larry had a number of interesting sports cars. He was active with the General Dynamics Sports Car Club while living in Ft. Worth. Larry will be remembered for his quick wit and sartorial style.
Survivors include his son Harley Harrison Welch, III and wife Deb; a daughter Tara Boelhauf; a granddaughter Meredith Boelhauf; a brother Wilson Alley Welch; and several nieces. He was preceded in death by a brother Wilbur Bryon Welch, Jr.

A memorial service will be held on Oak Island.
