Mary Lou is preceded in death by her husband David Weygant and her sister Betty Werner.
Mary Lou is survived by her four daughters: Catherine Hammond (James), Susan Heim (Peter), Carol Weygant, and Linda Weygant; 7 grandchildren: Meg Heim (Alex), Kevin Underkofler, David Hammond, Ryan Underkofler, Allison Hammond, Erik Weygant, Kylie Heim; and nephew, Rick Werner (Mike), and a large group of extended family and friends who loved her.
Mary Lou was born in Cape Girardeau, MO on January 3, 1935. She met the love of her life, David Weygant, while on vacation in Fort Lauderdale, FL, and they married on September 18, 1954. They were married for 60 years.
Mary Lou was best known as a smart, capable, loyal, hard-working tough cookie with a ‘can-do’ attitude wrapped around a soft, loving, marshmallow who would do anything for anybody. She didn’t suffer fools, and everybody knew exactly where they stood with her. She didn’t let life’s adversities bring her down, she pulled herself and everybody around her up, dusted off, and proceeded to tackle the next problem.
Mary Lou was a bookkeeper and worked at Weygant Electric, the electrical contracting company that David founded in 1966. When Dave closed Weygant Electric and began working in Saudi Arabia, Mary Lou settled her oldest daughter in college and moved with her other daughters to Spain to be closer to her husband when he was on leave. This move ignited a passion for travel and adventure that she had for her whole life.
When Dave was offered a job in Israel in 1979, they both decided they would not live apart again and they both moved to Israel to work for Negev Airbase Constructors, a company that contracted to build an air force base in the Negev Desert as part of the American contribution to the Camp David Accords, bringing peace to Israel and Egypt.
In 1981, Mary Lou and Dave settled in Boulder, Colorado, and purchased the Sundown Saloon, a dive bar in a college town that has earned a cult status as one of the top dive bars in the country. They made many great friends during their time owning their bar, and there are also many funny stories of a few customers being ejected by the tiny, white-haired Mary Lou when they became unruly. Mary Lou and Dave sold their bar to two of their employees, and they were so proud that the new owners made the bar even more successful.
Mary Lou and Dave “retired” to Lake Placid, FL, where Dave started yet another business as a rare coin dealer. While Dave had the keen eye and knowledge of the coin business, it was Mary Lou who did most of the ‘behind-the-scenes’ work. They travelled around the country to attend coin shows and auctions, and they cultivated many friendships along the way.
After Dave passed away, Mary Lou eventually moved to North Carolina to be closer to two of her daughters. She settled in Statesville with Carol.
Mary Lou was thrilled that she was able to travel to Europe one last time in the Fall of 2021 with Carol and Linda, exploring old castles and churches, and giving their regards to the dude on the horse.
In lieu of flowers, please raise a toast to Mary Lou who lived a full, wonderful life!
