Patricia Moorefield Gilbert

The family of Patricia Ann Moorefield Gilbert (“Gigi”) of Oak Island, NC is heart-stricken to announce that Tricia passed away peacefully in her home, surrounded by her loving family on Monday, September 1, 2025, in Oak Island, NC.

Tricia was born in Burlington, NC, to Samuel Peyton Moorefield, Jr. and Betty Ann Black Moorefield. Prior to retiring and moving to Oak Island, she taught school for many years at Cotswold Elementary in Charlotte, NC. Tricia is survived by her husband, Durral R. Gilbert of Oak Island, NC; her daughter, Mary Catherine Moorefield Gilbert of Raleigh, NC; her son, Peyton Moorefield Hove Gilbert and his wife, Meagan Claire Hove Gilbert, of Durham, NC; her sister, Kathryn L. Moorefield of Pine Knolls, NC; and her grandson, James Peyton Gilbert of Durham, NC. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her brother, Thomas Peyton Moorefield, and her sister, Mary Ann Moorefield.

Tricia lived her life with a deep and beautiful love for her family, friends and her many students, and she exemplified a grace and a caring nature that truly touched everyone who came to know her. Earlier in her life, Tricia was a skilled dancer, and later, used her artistic talents to enhance the learning of her students through dance and physical movement. Her family was very fortunate to have her love and unwavering support, and Tricia’s kindness impacted so many lives throughout her teaching career. She loved to travel, spend time with her family at the beach, cheer for the Tar Heels, and create a loving home—one that will be cherished by her children, grandchildren, and future generations.

The family would sincerely like to thank the physicians and caregivers at Mt. Sinai Medical Center (New York, NY), MD Anderson Cancer Center (Houston, TX) and Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center (Wilmington, NC), who provided Tricia with countless hours of care, support, and love. Their kindness and assistance during Tricia’s year and a half of treatments will be remembered fondly.

The family will hold a Memorial Service for Tricia at Myers Park United Methodist Church in Charlotte, NC on Saturday, September 20, at 12:30pm in Jubilee Hall.

In honor of Tricia’s lifelong love for flowers, floral arrangements are appreciated. Further, donations in her honor may be made to Myers Park United Methodist Church of Charlotte, NC.
