Long time St. James resident Paul Dewey passed away September 10, 2024. Dewey and I moved to St. James from Switzerland in January of 2003. Dewey quickly jumped into the game he loved, joining the MGA and subbing in several groups. His quick smile lit his beautiful blue eyes, and his sarcastic wit could catch you off guard, but underneath he was friendly, fun loving and gregarious. To keep himself busy while I continued my career, he worked in different roles helping to expand and strengthen the MGA. Dewey’s steadfast support for using age-appropriate tees rankled some, but really was his effort to allow folks like himself to continue to play and compete as they aged. Golf also allowed him to give back to the community, working with Wayne Dadetto to establish the Military Appreciation Tournament.
Dewey grew up in Pittsburgh, PA the middle child between brother Jack (deceased) and younger brother Denny. He graduated from Central Catholic, attended Pitt and served in the US Army. He started his career at A&P, then moved into Sales Management for Campbell Soup, GlaxoSmithKline, Dep and Hosch Industries.
His family was the center of his world, with son Paul Jr., daughter Kathleen and husband Stephen Blum, daughter Keleigh and daughter Kayce and husband Nick Karlo. If you knew Dewey, you knew Dakota and Mia his beloved grandchildren. After my sister passed away in 2005, his heart was big enough to love and support my nephew Max and niece Carleen when they needed us most. Dewey was the perpetual Dad, applying equal parts love and sandpaper, while teaching teenagers to drive and guide them through life lessons. He loved coaching and mentoring young people at work and carried his passion to ‘training’ the many Tournament Directors on the in and outs of running MGA events.
Dewey shot his age each year for the past few years and had 2 holes in one in the same week. He loved to critique partners golf swings and offer insights whether you wanted to hear them or not! His love for the Steelers never waned nor did his passion for life.
A Celebration of Dewey’s life is scheduled for Saturday October 19th at St. James Founders Club. More details to follow.
