

Colonel (Ret.) Ralph Allen Luther of Southport, NC passed away on November 21, 2017. He was 83 years old. He is preceded in death by the love of his life, Edith M. Luther, his parents, John and Elinor Luther, brother Jack Luther and sister Brenda Slater.
He was a loving father to his three children, Brenda J. Luther (Wife Christina) of Hampstead, NH, Mark A. Luther (Wife Susan) of N. Situate, RI and Karen E. Austin (Husband Bryson) of Southport, NC. He was an adoring grandfather to Asahi Eveleth, Derek Luther, Bryan Luther and Sam Luther and cherished great-grandfather to Kamryn Eveleth, Molly Eveleth and Charlie Eveleth.
Ralph was a Christmas baby. A proud graduate of the United States Military Academy, class of 1957, he served for over 29 years in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers until May of 1987, when he retired. During his Army career he served two tours in Vietnam, was stationed in Germany, Japan and numerous army bases in the United States.
Retirement took him to the Anne Arundel County School System as the Director of Maintenance and Operations for 15+ years. Ralph capitalized on his vast army engineering experience which earned him the highest respect from school administrators, county executives and the people he managed. He was a great boss who put his people first.
He received his Master’s Degree in Engineering from Purdue University in August 1964. In 2010, he was inducted into the Hartford Public High School Athletic Hall-Of-Fame.
He loved going to antique auctions, playing racquetball, playing golf and trying his luck at the slot machines. He was a long time resident of Pasadena, MD until his beloved wife passed.
A memorial service will be at 3:00pm, Saturday, December 2nd at Peacock-Newnam and White
Funeral Home in Southport, NC, followed by a celebration of Ralph’s life at the Founder’s Club in St. James. He will be interred in West Point Cemetery, West Point, NY on April 1st, 2018.
