
Mrs. Garland was born April 24, 1922 in Yancey County to the late Franklin and Martha Gortney. She was preceded in death by her husband Walter Lee Garland; three brothers; four sisters; two son-in-laws, Elbert Sullivan, Stephen Vallender, and a grandson-in-law Joseph Staradumsky.
Surviving are her two daughters, Clara Sullivan and Linda Vallender, of Winnabow; a sister Naomi Henry of Wilmington; six grandchildren Michael Fields and wife Sally, Mark Fields and wife Kim, Kara Mitchell and husband John, Deborah Senekal and husband Andre, Sarah Southerland and husband Randy, and Lisa Batts and husband Bryan; nine great-grandchildren; Chad and Andy Staradumsky, Mark, Tyler, Ethan and Alyssa Fields, Britton and Kyleigh Piner, and Jessica Turner; and three great-great-grandchildren, Kynleigh, Lena, and Ava.
The funeral service will be held at 12 noon on Thursday, October 22, 2015 at New Hope Presbyterian Church with Reverend Bob Haywood officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 11 to 12 prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons and great-grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be John Mitchell, Andre Senekal, Randy Southerland, Bryan Batts, and Ed Maultsby.
