She was born January 28, 1936 to the late Spurgeon Parrish and Mamie P. Meares. Shirley was an active member of Town Creek Baptist Church where she sang in the choir and served on numerous committees of the church. She loved the Lord and enjoyed life to the fullest. She was always hopeful and mindful of others.
Shirley is survived by her husband, William, of the home; a daughter, Beverly Edwards of Winnabow, North Carolina; three sons, Rev. Richard Edwards and wife Brenda of Jacksonville, Florida, James Troy (Jimmy) Edwards and wife Yvonne of Wilmington, North Carolina, William (Billy) Cumbee, Jr. and wife Kassie of Leland, North Carolina; one brother, Ronnie Meares of Lumberton, North Carolina; six wonderful grandchildren, Adrienne Gibbs, Angela Eisman, Jennifer Cumbee, Shane and Kayla Edwards, and Elizabeth Cumbee; two great grandchildren, Taylor and Savannah Gibbs; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 2:00pm Sunday, November 18, 2018 at Town Creek Baptist Church with Reverend Vic Potter and Reverend Richard Edwards officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Scott Phillips, Andrew Phillips, Shane Maultsby, Neil Maultsby, Stevie Sullivan, and Greg Benton. Honorary pallbearers will be Hugh Phillips, Tom Maultsby, B.J. Mills, Johnnie Smith, and Bob Lowery.
The family will receive friends from 7:00pm to 9:00pm Saturday, November 17, 2018 at Peacock-Newnam & White Funeral and Cremation Service in Southport.
