Albert J. Angel, 69, known to everyone as Albe, passed away on January 27, 2024. He was born in Brooklyn, New York on May 7, 1954 to David and Stella Angel, Holocaust survivors and immigrants from Salonika, Greece. Albe came from humble beginnings, working in the family grocery store in Sheepshead Bay, and as a New York taxi driver to put himself through Brooklyn College. He obtained law degrees from California Western School of Law in San Diego and the Georgetown University Law Center, and started his career as a federal prosecutor in the Antitrust Division of the U.S. Department of Justice, litigating a major portion of the landmark U.S. vs. AT&T divestiture case.
Albe stopped practicing law to pursue his true passion, using his thoughtfulness, vision, kindness, and incredible tenacity to become a successful businessman, investor, and entrepreneur. He loved meeting people with new, exciting ideas, especially if they had ideas for an interesting start-up. He co-founded and sold one of the first internet billing companies, and over the years pursued diverse ventures and leadership roles in telecommunications, technology, gaming, real estate, art, and the diamond industry. He pushed and prodded New Jersey law enforcement to successfully prosecute the theft of his internet domain, a landmark case in the field. On the weekends, he loved playing tennis, early morning bike rides, and taking his dogs to the dog park.
Albe was tall, broad-shouldered, and strong, but will be most remembered for his kind, loving, gentle soul. He loved dogs, especially his Carolina dog Annie, and they loved him back, almost as if they could sense their own loving innocence mirrored in him. He was an activist for manatee conservation, and was awarded the key to the city of Hallandale for his work in helping protect the manatee population by changing the boat speed zoning laws. He loved those close to him unconditionally, especially his children, who he showered with love and affection during their childhood, and whose passions and desires he embraced and encouraged no matter the situation. He was generous to those in need, encouraging and non-judgmental to those down on their luck, and was always possessed of a comforting and calming softness. He was committed, loving, and loyal to his life partner, Lesli, with whom he shared every aspect of his life.
Albe is survived by his wife Lesli Angel; children Arielle Angel (Michael McCanne), David Angel (Emily Angel), and Rachel Angel; stepson Ari Epstein; sister Juliette Angel and brother-in-law Gregory Karcnik; nephews David Karcnik, Jacques Karcnik, niece Stella Karcnik; and too many friends to mention.
He will be missed terribly.
