Carole Shaffer, of Delray Beach, FL, passed away on October 26, 2023, at the age of 89. Born on April 11, 1934, Carole was a devoted and beloved mother of four children and a cherished grandmother to three, Sarah and Summer Shaffer and Glen Kussner. She is now reunited with Leonard “Lenny” Shaffer, her husband of over 60 years. As well as her beloved parents, Bella and Leon Glass.
Carole was born in Boston, MA and grew up in Dorchester where she met many of her life long treasured friends who have become family. She met Lenny when she was taking classes at Boston University and was shortly swept off her feet. Many would tell you that he looked like Cary Grant and Carole, a 1940’s movie star. Once married, she put her formal education on hold to raise four children in a sleepy northern suburb of Boston.
Her love and dedication to all her children, she would tell you, was her greatest achievement. Carole’s nurturing, kindness, and love lives on through daughter, Carla Shaffer, her husband, Stephen Kussner, son Glen Kussner and his wife, Amanda, daughter, Wendy Shaffer, son Stanley Shaffer, his wife, Charlene and daughters, Summer and Sarah, and daughter, Marci Shaffer.
Traveling was also one of her greatest loves. We think it was because she was such a naturally curious person and wanted to understand and see for herself the beauty of our vast country but also understand our similarities and differences. Carole loved learning about different religions, cultures and ways of being. To name just a few, her travels brought her to Jackon, Wyoming, the Grand Tetons, Yellowstone, Bozeman, Montana, Santa, Fe, New Mexico, Canadian Rockies, and all of the New England states. She found peace and grace when she was in big sky country with her family over the years.
Despite her years reading novels, biographies, daily newspapers, following world politics, traveling, visiting museums, and stamp and coin collecting, she never let go of the dream to return to formal education. So, when she was in her 50’s, she went back to school and earned an associate degree and graduated cum laude. Lenny, Wendy, and Marci were by her side to cheer her on when she received her degree. Her parents, Bella and Leon Glass who were living at the time, were equally proud of her accomplishment.
She leaves behind a legacy of love and togetherness that will be a source of comfort and strength for her family in their time of grief.
Carole Shaffer will be deeply missed by her family and all who had the privilege of knowing her, but her memory will continue to bring warmth and light into their lives.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice in Carole's memory.
A graveside service for Carole will be held Wednesday, November 1, 2023 at 12:30 PM at Menorah Gardens & Funeral Chapels, 21100 West Griffin Road, Southwest Ranches, FL 33332.
