I remember Ed as being a really nice guy in high school.  My last contact with him was last summer before our reunion.  I'm sorry you didn't get to come Ed, you missed a fun time and now you will be missed by your many friends and classmates.   I'll remember you by your smile and kindness.


I met Ed and Mark in sixth grade at Sweet Home, and it was the beginning of a long and special friendship.  A few years ago he sent me a picture of Nancy and me sitting on a couch smiling at someone.  But, no name or inscription just "guess who?"  Nancy figured it out that we were at Ed and Leslie's place.  I found his contact info. and the first thing he said was, "how's my old Woodstock buddy".  Mike Izzo has captured so many memories of the summer at the cottage, the mustang, parties, his parents, and the furniture store.   Ed and I both moved out of Buffalo in the 1970s, although I always think of Buffalo as home.  I miss you, and I'm not alone in missing you from your many friends from Sweet Home & Buff State.  Jim

I BELIEVE IT WAS THE SPRING OF 1966; LESLIE AND I WERE 15, WHEN ONE AFTERNOON A SHINNY MAROON MUSTANG PULLED INTO OUR DRIVEWAY. HIS DOOR OPENED AND OUT STEPPED THIS TALL, GORGEOUS MAN WITH SILKY BLACK HAIR. HE WAS DRESSED SO IMPECCABLE FROM HEAD TO TOE, LOOKING LIKE A MODEL FROM GQ MAGAZINE! I became friends with Jon in the late 90s and met Eddie at the car lot they had on military rd. I’ll never forget the first time I met Eddie we talked for about 45 min it felt like I was talking to someone I know my whole life. He was one of the most caring, genuine and intelligent people u could ever meet. Jon, Eddie and I use to go to the auction in Rochester every week and the drive seemed like it only took 10 minutes because of all Eddie’s great story’s. I never forget the boat rides with him. I could go on and on with all the story’s and good times. He loved both his sons and grandchildren very much. I remember when my daughter was born in 2004 I brought her to the shop and Eddie held her for a long time then said to me can u tell my boys to get busy I really want grandkids lol. Eddie Haber was a great man who if u met u couldn’t help but love the guy. He was a very special person who will truly be missed. Rest In Peace my friend. 

Part 1 of 2


Most people knew Ed through his decades of managing auto dealerships around Buffalo.  Few know that before this, he was studying law in California.  It took courage for him to leave a career path in law to instead pursue work that he would actually enjoy.  He had Manny’s people skills and loved cars like his ‘71 Mustang Fastback, and thus created his own successful career.  He moved up quickly through sales and made wide-ranging friendships along the way.  Over the years he became General Manager of several large dealerships and was well-regarded as a fair boss.  
 
It is not for me to relate what a good son he was (he was) or the joy his granddaughters gave him (they did).  Instead here are some reflections of my experience with Edward Haber.
 
He moved to the Maplemere neighborhood and began lifelong friendships with, among others, Mark Danziger, Jim Stefano, and one-name people like Ronna, Pepi, and Davis.  We took the same school bus, at least until we could drive.  I sat directly behind Ed in many classes all four years at Sweet Home High School and provided ample distraction throughout.

I liked going to Haber’s Seneca Street furniture store on Saturdays.  Ed would wait on customers, (his Mother) Edith would make lunch, and Uncle Sam would tell Merchant Marine stories and occasionally load furniture onto customers' cars.  His Dad, Manny ran the show and provided acerbic entertainment.  Ed's folks were wonderful to me; always fed me, told me stories and taught me Yiddish.   Visiting their cottage at Crystal Beach brought trips to the Midway and rides on the Comet to another level. Whether or not you believe in love at first sight, I can tell you that Eddie had no other girl in his heart since he met Leslie as a teenager.   
 
We took several Spring break road trips to South Florida.  Gas was cheap and Eddie loved driving.  One epic trip we went camping down the East coast to Key West and up the Gulf coast. The only traffic tickets he ever got were while driving my car. Amid the sit-ins and war protests of the early 70s, an enduring friendship with Alan Baron developed, and we all became housemates for a while.  It was the best of times. Alan and I stood up in his and Leslie’s wedding party on Delaware Avenue. With aspirations and reverie, we celebrated our little hearts out.

Later after they moved back to Buffalo, we became backyard neighbors and watched our children grow up. I came to love Jon and Justin, who still call me Uncle Mike.  I will always love Leslie and the memories we share.
 
Ed Haber was one of my oldest and closest friends. Aside from missing his conversation and emotional support, I have lost a personal historian who would tell me stories about our lives that I did not remember. In losing Ed, we have all lost a part of ourselves.
 


You were more than a father in-law to me, your my dad. I will miss our weekly hour long phone conversations about nothing. I will cherish your wisdom and guidance that you gave me over the 17 years I’ve known you. You taught me to find best in people no matter what. You had a heart of gold and a perspicacious mind that amazed me. The love you had for your family was evident. You were the best Father and Poppy anyone could ever ask for. I will always love you! Until we meet again on the other side. ♥️♥️♥️♥️

My Uncle Eddie was a kind & soft spoken man who loved his family very much! I will always remember his gentle smile and exuberant happiness whenever we would all get together for the holidays or special occasions. He will be greatly missed.

Ed was one of the most kind-hearted,caring, loving, intelligent men that I knew and was so lucky to have in my life. He always saw the best in people no matter what. I loved listening to all of his stories. I loved joking around with him about how I hated sports and he would always say how I missed a great game that night. He loved to garden and always tried hard to teach me how not to kill a plant. He will always have a place in my heart as my second father. He was the best Poppa Eddie to his granddaughters. He always cherished every moment with them. I will truly miss everything about him. Ed, you were the best and loved by so many people. We love you very much! Rest in peace, sweet man!
