It has taken me a few weeks to stop by here, Grandma Pearl. This whole month has been a dark cloud and doesn't feel real. In some ways, I imagine you saw all this chaos on the horizon and ensured your family and adopted family got a chance to come together and celebrate your life before we all had to go into isolation. You are a wise, wise woman, and I would expect nothing less of you. You have always lived with intention, moving through the world with a stubbornness that I will always admire. 

I remember the first time we met on July 4, 2016. You cursed and drank with the best of us and impressed us with stories of being an educator in the South during school integration. I am glad you had such a larger than life impact on generations of students you taught. After that day, I was lucky enough to share many more holidays and trips with you. When I visited your home, you always invited me in with a hug and a smile. It didn't matter if I was weary from a long plane ride, you always made me feel at home. In the mornings, you would share a coffee with me and tell me what crazy news I had already missed. You updated me about your life and your ups and downs. I think I will miss those normal conversations the most. You always interwove life lessons into our chats and for those I am grateful. 

Your passing feels surreal and we are already missing your monumental presence so much. It pains me to think we shared one of our chats and a bottle of wine just last month. I will cherish those memories with you. I know you will live on in my memories and in my heart. I hope to be as accomplished and, one day, as strong of a mother and grandmother as you are. 

Thank you for welcoming me into your family. Thank you for passing on your love, values, and wisdom to your grandson, Josh. And most of all, thank you for being a rock and a teacher to so many. 

We will miss you so much, Grandma Pearl. We keep you in our hearts and minds and will raise a glass in your memory always. 

I only met Grandma Pearl during her final 2 years of her beautiful life, but I'm so happy that I did.

She had such amazing stories and memories of growing up back in the age when T-Rex was still roaming the earth (lol jk). But she did have such fantastic stories of growing up in a time when so many odds were stacked against her and demonstrated how a strong woman could be such a true pioneer in so many of the amazing things she did.

Glad I got to throw back a drink or few with her, and can't wait to do it again some day.
