September 21, 1926 – November 25, 2023
Zaida Violeta Matthews, age 97 of Miami, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her five daughters. Born in Camaguey, Cuba, it was WWII that brought her together with the love of her life, Greely Matthews, a US Navy man. When the war ended, Greely returned to Cuba to marry his love. The family lived in Connecticut for over 25 years, before moving to Miami to be closer to Violeta’s family and away from the cold winters. She and Greely helped many of her family members emigrate to the US from Cuba. These family members all lived with them until they were settled. Violeta & Greely lived in Miami (Westchester area) for 20 years, and after retirement, spent 27 years in Tequesta and Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Violeta returned to Miami in 2018.
Music and singing was always part of her life, as was dancing and crocheting. She taught her daughters to sing in harmony, and she was a gifted crafty lady. Violeta lived a standard of loving unconditionally, helping those in need and selflessly giving of her time as an active choir member & volunteer at her local church wherever she lived. She brought sunshine to everyone she encountered.
Violeta is predeceased by her husband of 58 years, Greely Matthews and granddaughter Jessica Matthews. She is survived by daughters Linda Twitchell, Anita Johnson (Leon), Diane Sutton (Jim), Elena Myer (Greg) and Rita Anson (JD), one brother, and one sister. Violeta also leaves behind 13 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.
Our family would like to thank Eli and Migdalia, two beautiful human beings who cared for our mom with love, patience and joy. Also, Accent Hospice for the dignity and peace they helped provide our dear mother in her final days.
