Just wanted to upload a second photo of Mel and Kevin in France.

Mel was a young and kind history teacher at BHS. I had her for World History my freshman year, 1988. She and Kevin even chaperoned our trip to France. They were a wonderful couple.

Mel would tease us in a funny way. Because she had just gotten braces and talked so quickly, she would produce a lot of...well saliva. She would be going a mile a minute and then suddenly stop talking and say, "Oh sorry did I spit on you?" It used to crack me up.

I am so sorry to hear of her illness and passing.  I was happy to see that she and Kevin were able to have children to spread their love and kindness. Thank you for sharing so many photos of her and the people in her life. I especially love the one of her and Mr. D'Amato - too cute. I have a photo of she and Kevin in France to share.

How is mom doing? Are you happy? Is it as peaceful as they say? I miss you .  So glad that you can be together with mom and dad. We're sad here but know that you're happy there.  And stop teasing Kevin and the kids with your antics. No more turning off the TV or pictures showing up where they don't belong. It would be funny if it wasn't so sad. But we know you're just showing us that you're OK. We love you.

Loved Mrs. Melberger. She was always herself and loved teaching and enjoyed the company of her students.

Bernie Melberger was a charismatic presence in all of our lives as we raised our children together.  I loved the crazy mornings during cheering when we would sit and share laughs and tunes.  Watching her passion for teaching, travel , music and simple humanity was infectious.  I loved debating history with her and when I began teaching high school history I remember asking Bernie what was the most important thing I should do...her response BE ENTHUSIASTIC ,JACKI...BE YOURSELF and SHARE YOUR PASSION-ever herself, ever enthusiastic and ever passionate I send my love and prayers to the countless students she touched but most of all to her husband Kevin,and her amazing children Chris, Sara and Emily....these fine people are her legacy and I cherish the warmth that Bernie and her family brought to my family.  God Bless!

The first time I met Mrs. Melberger at Sparta High School I instantly loved her. She was so full of energy and light! I understood why my daughters Daria and Mackenzie said she was their favorite teacher. They did so much with her while attending Sparta High. I am so thankful that she was such an integral part of their teenage years. She will be greatly missed and affectionately remembered.

Kevin, Chris, Sara, Emily and family, we are so very sorry for your loss. Bernie touched so many hearts and she will live on in her legacy of love. Sending thoughts and prayers to you all during this difficult time.

Hard to comprehend Bernie is telling jokes up in heaven and we don't have her with us on earth anymore.  It just does not seem fair.  She was a beautiful, fun loving person who was able to touch so many lives, and also be a great mother and wife to her family.

I will cherish our times at Shawnee High School together (class of 78), as well as our staying in touch  via FB after she moved. talking As a fellow history teacher, we would talk about politics and old times.  We had so many laughs using emojis, and shared many views and outlooks on so many issues.

Life on earth will never be the same, but the memories of Bernie will forever be burned in your hearts.  May your heavy hearts lessen just a little bit as each day goes by, but life will never be the same without her.  She will be your forever angel.  Notice the signs.

To the family of Bernie Melberger, Our daughter had Mrs. Melberger for history both as a freshman and a senior, and graduated in 2006. Your wife and mother brought her love of history and her tremendous love of life to each and every student. Our daughter bonded with Mrs. Melberger and kept in touch with her, if only by Facebook long after leaving Sparta High School. Bernie touched so many lives during her years at Sparta High School; her gift of love made it possible for so many students to thrive long after they departed Sparta High. Her influence and love will continue to live on in the hearts of her students. We were all deeply saddened to learn of her passing. She was so young. We know personally the toll that cancer takes on so many families; my brother passed away 3 years ago at 53 1/2 leaving behind a daughter who was only 13 at the time. Please know that our entire family sends our deepest condolences and know that Bernie was unforgettable. Her laugh and her joy and her great personality will be remembered by our entire family. Know always that your entire family was deeply loved by Bernie and she talked about each of you all of the time in the classroom. We are grateful to know that she passed peacefully in her sleep and is out of pain now. We know that she will be looking down from heaven and watching over you everyday.
