Formerly of Oak Ridge and Franklin, NJ, Evelyn was born in Astoria, Queens, NY on February 28, 1933. Following her graduation from St. Nicholas of Tolentine High School, she attended the Katharine Gibbs School for secretarial training, a career she practiced at various times in her life, but longest at American Cyanamid in Wayne, NJ.
She was predeceased by her parents, Richard and Gertrude Hodges (Hagan), older sister Mary Jane (Theiss), and former husband, John Francis Stubing.
She was a devoted mother and mother-in-law to her three sons and their wives, John “Jack” (Dawn), Robert “Bob” (Martha) and Michael “Mik” (Stephanie). She instilled in her sons a sense of unwavering integrity and loyalty, as well as a strong work ethic.
She was a proud grandmother of four grandchildren, Kevin, Shannon, Amanda and Zachary, as well as three great-grandchildren, Emma, Harper and Aria.
Evelyn had an adventurous spirit and loved to travel and was fiercely proud of her Irish heritage. Blessed with a quick wit and a sometimes-sharp tongue, she was not afraid to express her opinion on subjects important to her. Nevertheless, she enjoyed many lifelong friendships, even with people with whom she disagreed.
She was active in her community, volunteering for many years at St. Clare’s Sussex Health Center, and serving as an officer in the Church of St. Jude’s Senior Club in Hardyston.
She drove until she was 89 and moved to Delaware to live with one of her sons. There she indulged her lifelong love of crossword puzzles, played Mah Jong at the local community center, and even started tai chi lessons.
Evelyn Stubing will be remembered as a loving mother, a devoted friend, and a remarkable woman who lived life to the fullest. Her legacy of love, kindness, and adventure will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing her. She will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by her family, friends, and all whose lives she touched.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in Evelyn’s memory to the St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, a charity she supported for many years.
A funeral mass for Evelyn will be held Tuesday, December 3, 2024 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Immaculate Conception Church, 75 Church St, Franklin, NJ 07416, followed by an entombment at Immaculate Conception Cemetery.
