George passed away peacefully at Newton Medical Center in Newton, NJ after a brief illness. Born on February 11, 1930 in Essex County, NJ to Louis Clinton Lyon and Catherine (Cullis) Lyon, George and his older brother Louis spent their early years in Mine Hill, NJ and then Millburn, NJ before moving to the Jersey shore. Mr. Lyon attended Manasquan High School, serving in the US Navy after graduation.
George married Constance A. Carter on October 11, 1952. Over their nearly 73 years of marriage, George and Connie were parents to five children and were grandparents seven times over, with another eight great grandchildren bringing even more joy to their lives.
A dedicated husband and father, George was deeply involved as a coach, mentor, and guide to his children, and he and Connie were tirelessly supportive of their children and grandchildren attaining higher levels of education in college and beyond. Dismayed by the departure of the Giants from New York to San Francisco, he soon found a new team in the New York Mets and was a lifelong fan of the blue and orange.
George spent his entire career at the Jersey Central Power & Light Co., progressing from lineman to a leadership role in the Safety Department, where he was extremely proud of the work he did in ensuring first responders were well prepared as they performed their life-saving efforts near damaged electrical lines.
George is survived by his wife, Connie, their children David George (Norka Suarez), John Michael (Kimberly), Kevin James (Rebecca), Kathleen Anne (Darrell Berger), and Louis Andrew (Alene Lee), seven grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. He will be remembered for his calm demeanor even in the face of challenges, and his remarkable sense of ‘Lyon’ humor, which continues to be joyfully passed down through multiple generations.
