Gerard was born on December 12, 1949 to Walter and Bertha Piper in Middle Village, NY. He was raised as an older brother to younger sisters, Jean and Barbara.
On April 4, 1971, Gerard began his life with his wife of 52 years, Lynda Piper. In 1980, Gerard and Lynda relocated to Sparta where they raised their two children, Michael, who serves as an NYPD Captain, and Melissa. Gerard and his family spent their beginning years on Arapaho Trail, but in later years relocated to Cherry Tree Lane where Gerard spent the remainder of his life. Gerard was passionate about his work life; spending 42 years as an electrician, involved in major projects in New York City, including the construction of the World Trade Center, before he retired from IBEW Local 3 as a Journeyman Electrician 13 years ago. As passionate as Gerard was about his work life, most would say he was even more passionate about the Yankees. He loved wearing his favorite Yankees hat while he watched the games. If Gerard was not making new friends while walking his dog, Ellie, you could find him maintaining his immaculate yard, or even working on his restored antique street light. He loved hands on work, and could fix anything handed to him. Gerard was a ‘Jack of all Trades.’
Alongside endless kind words to say about Gerard, he never had anything bad to say about anyone and was always quick to help any friend or stranger. He was a humble Christian Man, whoever was lucky enough to have the gift of knowing Gerard, truly loved him.
Visitation will be held at Goble Funeral Home, 22 Main Street, Sparta NJ, 07871 on Saturday June 17, 2023 from 2pm to 6pm with a prayer service at 5pm. In lieu of flowers, donations are asked to be made to Father John’s Animal House in Lafayette, NJ.
