John was born in Jersey City, NJ and raised in Union City, NJ. He graduated from Holy Family High School in Union City, NJ. A proud Veteran of the United States Armed Forces, John served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict as an ammunition specialist from 1951 to 1954. He worked as a foreman in the field of photography equipment distribution and retired from Bogen Photo Corp.
John’s true passion was his family both immediate and extended with the reputation of a true humble gentleman. He lived a life of integrity and generosity, values he instilled in those closest to him. He formed lifetime bonds of friendship with a close group. John always made room for those he cared about, showing kindness in ways both big and small. Whether offering a helping hand or giving someone the shirt off of his back, John’s selflessness knew no bounds. He will be missed beyond measure.
John enjoyed the simple things in life including cheering on the NY Mets and Yankees and his favorite college basketball teams. His love for sports was not limited to the professional leagues. In his youth, he was the basketball manager for his high school team whom during his time made it to the state championship. John spent every opportunity he had to celebrate all the milestones of life with his beloved family and friends.
John was predeceased by his parents, John and Fortunata Knoeppel; his sister, Lillian Roth and husband, Peter; his “adopted” son and nephew, Martin Roth; as well as many other siblings. He is survived by his “adopted” daughters, Karen Roth and Gail Russo and husband, Peter; his nephew, Sherman Volkman; his great-niece, Jordan Franklin and husband, Sean; his great-nephews, Christopher Pszonek and partner, Gillian Norton, Peter Roth and fiancé, Carly Sandstrom, and his great-great-niece, Rylee Franklin; his great-great-nephew, Liam Franklin; as well as many other nieces, nephews and extended family members.
Memorial Visitation will be held from 1 pm to 4 pm on Sunday, January 26, 2025, at Goble Funeral Home, 22 Main St, Sparta, NJ, with a Celebration of John’s Life beginning at 3:15 pm. Military Honors will be rendered to conclude the services.
