Sparta- Walter Tanis died peacefully at his home with his family by his side on Sunday, February 9, 2014. He was 90 years old. Walter was born in Rochelle Park, NJ to Joel and Irene (Maginnis) Tanis. He has resided in Sparta for 57 years, being formerly from Wyckoff. Walter served his country with the US Navy as a Seabee, of which he was extremely proud. He was a congregant of the First Presbyterian Church of Sparta, and held memberships in the Peace Officer’s Club of Newton, and the VFW Post 7248 in Sparta. Walter and his brothers worked with their father to build Joel Tanis and Sons in Fairlawn, NJ. In 1957 he moved his family to Sparta, and started Sparta Sand and Gravel as the owner/operator. Predeceasing him is a son: Glenn (1970) sister; Dorothy, and brothers; Joel Jr. and Charles. He is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, Anna (DeVries) Tanis, daughters; Patricia Myers (Stacy) of Oak Ridge, TN, and Sharon Shevach (Steven) of Hurley, NY; a son; Kenneth Tanis (Pamela) of Andover and a brother; Gerald, eight grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren. Family and friends are invited to calling hours Friday 9 ~ 12 followed by a Noon chapel service at Goble Funeral Home 22 Main Street Sparta, NJ 07871. Burial will follow in Sparta Cemetery.
