William F. Schmitt, 88, of Sparta, NJ died on December 29, 2010 at Newton Memorial Hospital, Newton, NJ . Bill was born in Brooklyn, NY and moved to Sparta 31 years ago. Bill served our country in the US Navy during WWll for four and a half years leaving as a First Class Boatswin Mate. He retired after 35 years of service in 1981 as a First Grade Detective, NYPD Bomb Squad. He is a life member of the Flatbush Council #497, Knights of Columbus, Brooklyn, NY, a member of Our Lady of the Lake Church, Sparta, NJ, a member of the Sparta VFW, and a member of the Sparta FOP. Bill is predeceased by his beloved wife Katherine (nee Lane) Schmitt. He is survived by his devoted son William C. Schmitt. Friends may call Monday and Tuesday, January 3 and 4, 2011 from 2-4, 7-9pm at the Goble Funeral Home, 22 Main St., Sparta, NJ. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11am Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at Our Lady of the Lake Church, 294 Sparta Ave., Sparta, NJ.
