

Passed away on May 24, 2012 at the Spokane Veterans Home with this wife, Mary, at his side. Bernie was born on May 25, 1920 to Jenette and John G. Meinertz in La Crosse, WI. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart, three bronze stars, Distinguished Unit Badge, European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, American Defense Service Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon and the World War II Victory Medal. He married Mary Francis Leibel on August 27, 1944. After retiring from Ralston Purina in Battle Creek, Michigan, Bernie and Mary spent the last 25 years in Spokane. He is survived by his wife, Mary of Spokane; daughter, Dorothyann (Duane) Gallarda of Spokane; three grandchildren, Doug (Olivia) Gallarda of Austin, TX, David Gallarda of Sultan, WA and Denice (David) Donaghy of Spokane, WA; seven great grandchildren; and twelve nieces and nephews. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks and gratitude to the Spokane Veterans Home for their loving care of Bernard and Mary. A graveside service with military honors will be held on Wednesday, May 30 at 2:00PM at St. Josephs Cemetery on Trent Ave in Spokane Valley.
