YAKIMA - It is difficult to say good bye, but it is with great pride and joy that we celebrate the life of Casper (Cap) McCormick. Cap was born May 14, 1918 on the family farm in Gleed, Washington, son of Casper Sr. and Sadie McCormick. He went to grade school and high school in Lower Naches, WA. Cap and Gladys Virginia DeGooyer were married on July 20, 1940 and they built a family home in Gleed, WA. In 2004 Cap and Virginia moved to Spokane Valley, WA to live closer to family.
During WWII Cap worked at Boeing Aircraft in Seattle, building B-17 and B-29 aircraft. After the war he worked at a Chevrolet dealer in Naches, WA and then at the Yakima Fruit Growers Association which later became Snokist Growers.
Cap loved the outdoors especially skiing, fishing and golfing. He was a member of the National Ski Patrol at White Pass for over 30 years and passed his love of skiing to his children. He was also a member of the Lower Naches Lions Club and a little league baseball coach. He loved to tend a large garden each year and grow fresh vegetables and sun flowers.
After Cap retired, he and Virginia traveled throughout the U.S. in their RV. They also went on cruises and traveled to Japan, Canada, Jamaica and Alaska. Cap never missed an opportunity to follow his beloved Mariners and Seahawks on TV. He was always interested in how things work and new technology. Just a few weeks ago he got into the internet and email when he bought an iPad. Cap and Virginia celebrated over 68 years together until Virginia’s death on April 14, 2009.
Cap was a calm man with a sense of humor and always saw the positive in his life. He taught us by example to treasure every experience in life.
Cap was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia, grandson Michael McCormick and sister Esther Sterling. He is survived by his daughter, Pam Conine, her husband Edward; his son, Dennis McCormick, his wife Sandra; his grandchildren and great grand-children are: Stephanie & Greg Denham, children Greg, Sarah, Peter and Lily; Cyndi & Jerry Sander, children Jeremiah, Nathan, Elijah, and Elizabeth; David & Colleen Conine, children Grace and Clare; Linette Conine, children Jaedon and Kalle; Kiersten and Gerard Manuel, children Mikaela and Anika; Jeremy and Lori McCormick, children Emily, Samara and Izabella; Shaun McCormick and Taunzia & Matt Hansen.
Cap McCormick passed away at his home in Spokane Valley on Saturday, September 18, 2010 at the age of 92. Memorial services will be held at Keith and Keith located at 902 W. Yakima Avenue on Monday Sept. 27. Visitation will be at 11 a.m, followed by the funeral at 1 p.m. A graveside service will be held immediately after at Tahoma Cemetery located at 1802 Tahoma Avenue.
