Fred Stanley "Skip" Arnold III

Fred “Skip” Arnold passed away at home on January 15, 2012. Skip was born in Providence, RI on July 20, 1930 to Fred and Ethel Arnold. He grew up in North Scituate, RI; where his first job was raking hay. When Skip was 16, he moved with his family to Twig, MN. Several years later he began working for the Gibson & Roberts a company that specialized in dam and tunnel building. At 21, he joined the Air Force and was stationed in Alaska. In the years following his military service, he worked construction began courting the love of his life, Shirley, whom he had known since childhood in North Scituate, RI. They married on May 4, 1957 and honeymooned on their way to Arizona where Skip was working on the Glen Canyon Dam Project. Their early years were spent traveling the western United States, as Skip continued in construction. They settled in Spokane Valley in 1962. Skip started his own drilling and blasting company, Arnold & Lowe, Inc. in 1966 working many projects throughout the years in the Northwest. Recreation during his working years was spent at their much loved cabin outside of Usk, WA. Following his partner’s retirement, Skip and his son renamed the company Arnold Drilling, Inc. Approaching and upon retirement, Skip and Shirley took a number of trips around the United States with good friends. They spent ten winters in Spring Hill, FL where Skip’s sister and brother and families live. Skip was a hardworking, great provider and devoted family man. He loved to help people—he would do anything for anyone. He was a long time, devoted member of Spokane Valley Baptist Church.He is survived by his three children and spouses, Pam Hopkins, Skip Arnold, Jr. (April McKay), Nancy Gurno (Terry); nine grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and two step great grandchildren; sister, Charlene (Curt) Fales of Spring Hills, FL; brother, Al (Mary Ann) Arnold of Duluth, MN; numerous nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his sweet wife Shirley and parents Fred & Ethel Arnold. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Skip’s caregivers: Katie Blanchette, Andrea Calico, Carla Hanna, Shea Murdoch, KimNipp and Stewart Poulsen, “You helped enrich Dad’s final 18 months.”

I am so sorry to hear of Skip's passing. I worked for Skip along with Vern Lincoln for a while back in about 1972.Little Skippy was just a boy & he would come with Skip to the jobs now & then. I enjoid working for him & Edith Low.
