Gertrude was born on July 10th, 1934 at Fort A La Corne, Saskatchewan, Canada, the daughter of Sherman and Susan (Smith) Dempsey. Her father was from America and her mother from Scotland. Less than a year after she was born, family moved to Tenino, Washington where she graduated from high school in 1952. She eloped and married her husband James Lohr on December 27th, 1963 in Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho. Later they moved to Greenacres, Washington, and had their only daughter, Susanne.
Gertrude had many adventures traveling with her family and friends. She took some great road trips through England and Scotland, following Route 66, and around the US with her brother, Jimmy and sisters, Evelyn and Jean. She loved working in the garden and sewing in her spare time. She will be remembered by all for her love, strength, independence and her “go, go, go never say no” attitude.
She is survived by her daughter Susanne, son-in-law Lonny, granddaughter Kari, grandson Adam, his wife Samantha, and the apple of her eye, great-grandson, William, along with numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents Sherman and Susan Dempsey; husband James Lohr; Brothers Jack, Earl, James, and Gordon Dempsey; Sisters Evelyn Bishop, Jean Svok, and Florence Smith.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home, 1306 N. Pines R., Spokane Valley, WA on Saturday, March 18, 2023 at 1:00 PM.
