Irma was born on January 15, 1954, in Granger, Washington, to Luis and Teresa Alcala. She grew up in the Yakima Valley, graduating from Granger High School in 1971. Irma spent much of her early career working for local supermarkets before following her dream of becoming a teacher. With dedication and perseverance, she returned to school and earned both her Bachelor’s degree and Master’s in Science Education from Heritage College. She went on to teach for many years in the Granger School District, where she inspired countless students with her compassion and commitment. In 2014, she moved to Spokane to be closer to family.
Family was always at the center of Irma’s life. She is survived by her children: Jamie (Sarah), Gabriel (Cheri), Shelby (Greg), and Kasey; and by her nine cherished grandchildren: Malachi, Elijiah, Izzy, Daniel, Amelia, Tristan, Harper, Elorah, and Clayton. She also found joy in caring for her “grand-dog,” Sheldon.
Irma was known for her warm heart, quick wit, and infectious laugh. She loved spending time with her family, thrift shopping for good deals, and going to the movies. Her love of science often spilled over into everyday life for an impromptu “experiment.” She also made sure no one ever left her house hungry; there were always plenty of snacks, meals, and “just in case” food around. She was wonderfully stubborn and never one to back down easily—if she felt strongly about something, you knew it.
Her legacy is one of kindness, resilience, humor, and unwavering devotion to her family. She will be deeply missed, but her memory will forever be a source of comfort and inspiration.
A visitation for Irma will be held Wednesday, September 17, 2025 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Hazen & Jaeger Valley Funeral Home, 1306 N Pines Rd, Spokane Valley, WA 99206.
