Roger Kent Barenz was born April 19,1942 in Minden, Louisiana. A born storyteller, Roger loved sharing stories of his childhood as a farm boy, working on the family homestead in Whitetail, Montana and later a family farm in Libby, Montana. He moved to Bainbridge Island to finish out his high school experience, forming meaningful friendships that lasted a lifetime. Roger completed a baccalaureate degree at Western Washington University and then volunteered in the US Air Force. While stationed at McChord Air Force Base in 1966 he met the love of his life, an Army nurse named Linda Trumbo. They were married shortly before Roger was deployed in support of the Vietnam War. He served honorably as a Combat Air Traffic Controller. Following his service abroad, Roger returned home to meet his daughter, Christine Marie. He and Linda continued to build a military connected life and ever-expanding family, later welcoming Theresa Ann and Sarah Elizabeth. Following his active-duty service, Roger and Linda returned to Spokane, WA where they raised their family and became active members of their community. Roger became a teacher, enjoying a career predominantly at Mead Junior High teaching history which matched his love of storytelling. He was particularly proud of coaching the Mead Junior High Future Problem Solving team to the 1985 National Championship. In 1997, he was awarded the “Teacher of Merit Award” as Washington State’s Most Outstanding History Teacher. Roger retired from teaching as well as the US Air National Guard with a rank of Lieutenant Colonel. In retirement, Roger dedicated himself to supporting his local community. He worked alongside Linda, donating countless hours in support of foster children in Spokane County. He also enjoyed volunteering in his church community. Roger loved a good meal, travel, sailing, golf, watching basketball, music and spending time with the many family dogs. Telling stories and yard work were activities he loved as well. Always most precious to Roger was his family, including his granddaughters. Roger survived by his beloved wife Linda and extended family and friends. A family graveside service will be held in July.
