Roger was born on March 1, 1936, to Martin L. and Janice M. Walser in Spokane, WA, where he grew up as the third of five children. From a young age, Roger displayed a natural talent for sports, excelling in football, baseball, basketball, and track. He graduated from West Valley High School in 1954 where he played in three State championship basketball tournaments and pursued his passion for the game at the University of Idaho before briefly attending Boise Junior College.
In 1955, Roger married Delores "Jackie" Maras, with whom he had two children, Lora and Kevin. He embarked on a distinguished career at Kaiser Aluminum Corporation's Mead plant, beginning in the same year. In 1957, Roger chose to serve his country by joining the US Army, where he served in Germany before his discharge in 1959. After his divorce in 1961, he later married Joan Clark in 1963, with whom he had two more children, Roger Jr. and Angela. Roger dedicated himself to his work, retiring from Kaiser Aluminum Mead Works in 2000. In 2002 Joan and Roger’s marriage ended and he married Irene Britton in 2003.
Roger's love for sports never waned throughout his life. In his youth he dreamed of playing baseball for the New York Yankees, following in his father's footsteps as a professional baseball pitcher. He thrived in basketball under the tutelage of Jud Heathcote. He remained active in recreational leagues for softball and basketball, and he was a passionate tournament bowler well into his late seventies. He enjoyed watching stock car racing at the Spokane Fairgrounds, attending the annual State B Basketball tournament, and horse racing at the Playfair racetrack.
Roger was preceded in death by his father, Martin L. Walser; mother, Janice M. (Johnson) Walser; brothers, Edward "Ted" Schusster and Richard "Dick" Schusster; sister, Judith (Walser) Ramsey, and numerous aunts and uncles.
