April 7, 1963 – September 1, 2025
Susan (Hern) Bates – Merrill, 62, of Spokane, Washington, passed away peacefully on September 1, 2025.
She was born in Spokane on April 7, 1963, to John and Peggy Hern, both of whom preceded her in death. She grew up in Spokane and graduated from Lewis and Clark High School in 1980.
Susan had a lifelong love of animals, especially parrots and other birds. She enjoyed their personalities, their chatter, and the companionship they brought into her home. She also loved being surrounded by flowers, especially roses, which always brightened her days and brought her joy.
Anyone who knew Susan will remember her quick wit, her stubborn streak, and her sassy sense of humor. She had a way of speaking her mind, but always with love, and she cared deeply for the people close to her. That mix of toughness and tenderness made her unforgettable.
In October of 1988, Susan met Tom Merrill, the love of her life, in a chance encounter that grew into more than three decades together. Their bond was one of laughter, companionship, and steady love through life’s ups and downs.
She is survived by her partner, Tom Merrill; her children Jamie Aronson (Michael) and Kristen Bates, both of Spokane; and her grandchildren Katie and Isaac. She is also survived by her brother Jon “Beaner” Hern and his wife, Patty, of Helena, Montana, as well as her nephews Greg, Casey, and Patrick.
Blue was her favorite color, and in her honor, the family invites guests at her celebration of life to wear blue as a tribute to her spirit. Services will be held on Saturday September 20th 2025 at Thornhill Valley Chapel, 1400 S Pines Rd, Spokane Valley, WA 99206
Susan’s legacy is one of strength, humor, and love. Quick-witted, sassy, stubborn, and caring, she left an impression on everyone she met. Her spirit will live on in her family, in the flowers she admired, and in the voices of the birds she loved so much.
