Adams, Anna Whitemarsh (Age 93) Passed away Thursday morning, September 8, 2011. Born Anna Mae Magers on March 23, 1918, in Deep Creek, Washington to Joseph Albert Magers and Mary Ann Magers. She was the second of four children, with two brothers, John and Glen, and a sister, Mary Jane. Anna grew up in Spokane, WA, and graduated from Lewis and Clark High School in 1936. She was fond of the outdoors and enjoyed golfing, snow skiing, hiking, swimming, and fishing. She especially loved camping, and vacationed frequently at Diamond, Spirit, and Loon Lakes and the Campbell River in Vancouver, BC. In 1946, she married Donald Whitemarsh. Don was diagnosed shortly thereafter with multiple sclerosis and thus Anna became the primary earner during a time that saw few women in the workforce. During these years, Anna received her Bachelor’s degree from Gonzaga University. In 1964, she made history by being one of two women to be the first to earn a Graduate Certificate in Banking from the Spokane Chapter of the American Institute of Banking. She was an active participant in the women’s business and philanthropy organization Beta Sigma Phi, serving as President for several terms. She was also a member of the Eastern Washington Chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society and treasurer of the Cerebral Palsy Care Center. Anna was a special aunt to her nieces and nephews, and would later become an honorary grandmother to her brothers’ and sister’s grandchildren. Don Whitemarsh passed away in 1972. In 1978, she remarried to long-time friend Jim Adams, who had one adult son, Mike Adams. In her retirement, she was very social and active, and enjoyed playing bridge and pinochle with her friends, and continued traveling and camping. Jim passed away in 1988. Anna lived at home by herself for 13 years before moving to Waterford on the South Hill in 2001. She spent ten years at Waterford, and was a favorite of the staff and the other residents. She is survived by her sister, Mary Jane Moore, stepson Mike Adams, as well as many nieces, nephews, and grand nieces and nephews. A visitation will be held Sunday, September 11, from 1:00 – 3:00 pm at Ball & Dodd Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held on Monday, September 12, at 2:00 pm at Manito Presbyterian Church, 401 E 30th Ave, Spokane, WA. Interment at Riverside Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Anna’s name to either Manito Presbyterian Church or the MS Society of America, 706 Haddonfield Road, Cherry Hill, NJ 08002.
