Charles DeWitt Gumm (Age 73) was born in Salinas, CA on December 2, 1940 to Rose and Claude Gumm. He graduated from Grant Union High School in Sacramento, CA in 1959. He then joined the Army in June of 1959 as a sheet metal repairman on helicopters. Charlie retired with honors in 1980, having served 42 months in Vietnam.
After retiring from the Army, he worked in the heating and air conditioning industry until 1995 when he retired.
While enjoying the retired life, he started geocaching, metal detecting, fishing, wood carving, puzzles, and kite flying. He joined the Spokane Wood Carvers club, in which he was President for a few years.
Charlie mastered carving and painting lifelike fish and fun cowboy characters. Always the advocate for veterans, he started the Spokane chapter of the Vietnam Veterans of America and was the president for 10 years. Charlie would always make sure to give a “Welcome Home” to any Vietnam Vet he met, as they were not given a welcome when returning home. Charlie has gone home and received the most comforting “WELCOME HOME”!
