Cindy Lou (Apley)Johnson was born October 1, 1951 in Elma, Washington. The youngest of 4 children (Lad, Sally, Daniel) born to William & Geraldine Apley. A true country girl, she grew up on a beautiful 160 acre parcel dubbed "Apley's Acres" where she enjoyed the outdoors & had many adventures with her beloved horse Mellie.
Cindy was active in her community organizations such as Future Farmers of America & Daughters of the American Revolution. She was an accomplished accordionist & excelled in school, graduating with Honors from Elma High School's Class of 1970. She knew from an early age that she wanted to be a nurse & graduated from the University of Washington School of Nursing in 1974. It was at the UW that she met her husband Jerry & they married on September 22, 1973.
Cindy loved the more challenging specialties in nursing, particularly the Emergency Room, ICU & Surgery. She became an Advanced Cardiac Life Support instructor as well as a Certified Post Anesthesia Recovery Nurse. She retired from the VA Hospital in 2014 where she held several positions including Manager of the Outpatient Surgery Recovery Department.
When not hard at work, she continued to enjoy the great outdoors & all of her animals. She became an avid musher of Alaskan Malamutes after being introduced to dog sledding in the 1980's. Her team of dogs eventually grew to 12 giving her many hours of both challenges & joy. Additionally, she managed to find time for the other outdoor activities she loved like hiking, biking, ATVing, water sports, snow skiing & traveling in her RV.
People were drawn to Cindy's warm, outgoing personality. She was very giving & upbeat. Although her journey ended on August 29, 2025 after a long battle with an aggressive form of Dementia, her joy for life will live on in all she touched. It was a privilege to have this beautiful person in our lives.
She is survived by her husband Jerry, Nine Mile Falls & her 2 children Jodi & Jason Katz, Nine Mile Falls; Jason & Alyshia Johnson, Spokane. She was also the proud Grandma of Garrett, Jamie, Jenna, Wyatt & Reese & never missed attending their sports & activity programs.
A private inurnment is planned with a Celebration of Life honoring her to be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to be made to the ALzheimer's Association or the Dementia Society of America in her name.
