Emery and Marjorie Carper

(April 4, 1922 - December 16, 2015)

Emery Chandler Carper was born April 4, 1922, in Promise, Oregon, to Alfred Carper and Promise (Phillips) Carper. Emery was the sixth of twelve children.

The family moved from Oregon to Rochester, Washington, where Emery graduated from high school. He served honorably in the United States 8th Army Air Force, 101st bomber division, 401st squadron. Emery was stationed in England as a cryptographer during World War II. After the war, he took advantage of the G.I. Bill, graduating from Washington State College (now Washington State University) in 1949.

Emery met Marjorie while attending college in Pullman, Washington, and they were married in 1947. While yet in College, he and Marjorie found the Christian fellowship that has been the center of their lives ever since. They enjoyed opening their home for fellowship meetings for many years.

Emery earned a scholarship to attend Stanford University in Palo Alto, California, where he received his degree in Physical Therapy. In 1950, the family moved to Spokane, where Emery practiced Physical Therapy, first in St. Luke’s Hospital and later in private practice. In the early years his practice involved working with patients disabled by polio, including many children. His wit, sense of humor and genuine care for people brought cheer to his patients and gave them hope. He retired in 1984. Emery and Marjorie greatly enjoyed their retirement years, traveling throughout the United States and abroad. They made a number of visits to Latin America, even living briefly in Costa Rica.

Emery is survived by his wife of 68 years: Marjorie; two sisters: Phyllis Larson of Salem, Oregon, and Lilly Harper of Albany, Oregon; three sons and their wives: Kenneth and Tanya of Pullman, WA, Daniel and Margaret of Orcas Island, WA, and Randy and Cristi of Richland, WA; eight grandchildren: Brent, Corin, Daren, Joe, Megan, Erik, Bryan, and Brandon; five great-grandchildren: Marissa, Jack, Calvin, Teagan and Margot; and many nephews, nieces, and friends. A combined memorial service for Emery and Marjorie will be held on Friday, January 8, 11:00 am at the Ball & Dodd Funeral Home, 5100 W. Wellesley Ave., Spokane, Washington.

Marjorie A. Carper

(May 18,1927 - January 1, 2016)

Marjorie Ann (Hain) Carper was born May 18, 1927, in a log cabin on a farm near Custer, South Dakota. Her parents were Wilbert Hain and Winnie (Dobberstein) Hain. When Marjorie was seven years old, the family moved to the Yakima Valley of Washington State, where she attended school, graduating from Prosser High School in 1945. Marjorie attended Washington State College (now Washington State University) in Pullman, where she met her husband, Emery Carper. They were married in 1947. While attending WSC, she and Emery found the Christian fellowship that has been the center of their lives ever since. They enjoyed opening their home for fellowship meetings. In 1950, after Emery obtained his degree in Physical Therapy at Stanford University, they moved to Spokane, where Emery was employed as a Physical Therapist at St. Luke’s Hospital. Later he had his own Physical Therapy practice for many years. The family included three sons: Kenneth, Daniel, and Randy. After the children were older, Marjorie obtained a Master’s Degree in Spanish and taught at Spokane Community College, retiring in 1982. Emery and Marjorie greatly enjoyed their retirement years, traveling throughout the United States and abroad. They made a number of visits to Latin America, even living briefly in Costa Rica. Marjorie’s many interests and activities included painting, writing hymns and poetry, and especially corresponding with friends. She enjoyed doing volunteer work and acting as interpreter for Spanish-speaking people in the community. Above all, she was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend to all she knew.

Marjorie was preceded in death (two weeks earlier) by her husband of 68 years, Emery. She was loved dearly and will be missed by a sister: Marilyn Russell of Hemet, California; three sons and their wives: Kenneth and Tanya of Pullman, WA, Daniel and Margaret of Orcas Island, WA, and Randy and Cristi of Richland, WA; eight grandchildren: Brent, Corin, Daren, Joe, Megan, Erik, Bryan, and Brandon; five great-grandchildren: Marissa, Jack, Calvin, Teagan and Margot; and many nephews, nieces and friends.

The family expresses appreciation to the caring staff at Evergreen Fountains Senior Living Community and Gentiva Hospice-Liberty Lake, for their outstanding support during Emery and Marjorie’s final days.

A combined memorial service for Emery and Marjorie will be held on Friday, January 8, 11:00 am at the Ball & Dodd Funeral Home, 5100 W. Wellesley Ave., Spokane, Washington.
