James Ulis Dobbins
May 22, 1942 – March 1, 2021
James Ulis (Jim) Dobbins, unexpectedly passed away at home in Mesquite, Nevada, March 1, 2021. Jim was born in Denver, Colorado on May 22, 1942 to Ulious George & Myrtle Marie Dobbins. He grew up and attended school in the Denver area. Jim joined the US Navy on October 29, 1959 where he served on the USS Morton as a first-class machinist mate. After serving honorably and being discharged, he turned around and reenlisted and was assigned to the USS Klondike, then was transferred to NATO until he finished out his tour and again honorably discharged. At one time while on the USS Morton, he and his two other brothers were all on the same ship to Viet Nam and of course, that was a big No, No. They were separated as soon as it was possible to do so.
When Jim returned to Denver, he worked for Gates Rubber Company for 4 years. Jim then went to work for General Electric Company. He went on to become a leader in the electric power generation field. Jim was a very well known and respected GE Field Engineer. Jim played a role in the successful installation on turbine generators at Southern California Edison, Arizona Public Service, Nevada Power and many others. He served as the GE West Region Manager of Power Generation Services from 1988 until his retirement in 1998.
Jim loved his guns, hunting, fishing, and his Lund boat. He also knew how to work on older cars and restore them. He was a man of many talents and spent many hours teaching his sons and daughter how to work on cars in general, as they might need it some day along with fishing and hunting. He and Rosalind also loved traveling in their RV. They went many special places that will always be remembered. Jim was also big on barbequing. He had two smokers and two big gas barbecues on the patio, along with the sink and fridge. This was his kingdom. He was a very good Chef and tried all kinds of different dishes to smoke, b’que or the Chinese Wok. Whatever it was, it always turned out delicious!
Jim is survived by his wife Rosalind and their combined family, JR (Debbie) Dobbins, Letha Dobbins, Dennis (Patricia) Dobbins, Stephanie Opheikens & Justin Yates, Natalie (Matthew) Everett, Melissa (Scott) Simar, his brother Dennis Dobbins, Thirteen grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Richard A. Dobbins and sister, Sandra Decker.
There will be a Memorial for Jim on May 22, 2021, from 11:00AM-4:00PM at his home in Mesquite, NV
