Larry Neil Domrese

Larry was born on June 26, 1950, in Spokane, WA to Patricia Kirkpatrick Gull and Lyle Domrese. He graduated from Rogers High School in 1968, the same year he met Nancy Ball at an all-city dance at the Spokane Coliseum. Larry joined the US Navy in 1971 and served two years of active duty aboard the USS Ogden, homeported in Long Beach, CA. On December 18, 1971, he married Nancy at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Spokane. They were married for 49 years until her death in 2020. Following his discharge from the Navy, he attended mortuary school at Mount Hood Community College in Gresham, OR and graduated in 1977. He and Nancy returned to Spokane, where Larry began his 32-year career at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home, the business founded by Nancy’s grandfather. In 2000, he graduated from Whitworth College with a bachelor’s degree in organizational management. After his retirement from Ball and Dodd, Larry owned and managed three UPS stores on Spokane’s South Hill until 2015.

In 1981, Larry joined the Spokane Central Lions Club and was an active member for the remainder of his life. He served as president of the club from 2001 to 2002 and received the Melvin Jones Fellowship award, which is the highest form of recognition given by the Lions Clubs International Foundation to honor individuals for dedicated humanitarian service.

Larry was a member of St. Francis Xavier Parish from 1982 to 2023 and St. Thomas More Parish from 2023 until his death.

For most of his adult life, Larry’s primary hobby was cycling. What started as a mileage contest grew into a family tradition. With his cycling club, the Greasy Weasels, and with family and friends, he rode tens of thousands of miles. He participated in Coeur d'Alene's Tour de Lacs (did 'em all!) and rode the annual 200-mile Seattle to Portland bike ride 26 times, often as a one-day rider, plus countless other organized and improvised rides.

Larry is preceded in death by wife Nancy Ball Domrese, father Lyle Domrese and mother Patricia Gull.

Larry is survived by his wife Constance, whom he married in 2022; son Daniel Domrese (Amber); daughters Kimberly Smith (Durk) and Angela Perkins (Jeremiah); his second mother, Alice Domrese; and siblings Cindy Esch (Chuck), Teresa Estinson (Joseph Dee), and Jim Gull.

Also surviving are grandchildren Thomas, Joshua, Molly and Katie Domrese, and Kierra and Elise Perkins; cousin Judy Chytil; and 15 nieces and nephews.

People often asked whether he was one of the Balls because of his association with the funeral home. "I'm not a Ball," he'd say, "but I'm a barrel of fun." He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, a brother, and a friend to more people than this page can hold.

Visitation and Rosary Service will be held Friday, September 18, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at St. Thomas More Parish, 505 W. St. Thomas More Way.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Patrick Kerst at 11:00 AM on Saturday, September 19, at St. Thomas More Parish. A reception will follow in the parish hall.

Interment will be at 2:00 PM at Holy Cross Cemetery, 7200 N. Wall.
