Michael (Mickey) Moreau was born on November 10, 1958 and just 64 years later, on June 20, he went on ahead of us to his home in Heaven. Mickey was born in Calgary, Alberta and although he became a U.S. citizen in 1984, he was always proud of his Canadian heritage. His work life began with pizza delivery, after which he flipped hamburgers, worked at a funeral home, pumped gas, managed a restaurant, opened people’s locks, and supervised a warehouse.
Mickey loved life! Most of all, he loved God, his family, and friends. Right behind, in no particular order, came Star Trek, his Honda Goldwing, music, camping, photography, Oreos, movies, Astronomy, his brother’s racecar, the Oregon Coast, fishing, his shop, the apple orchard, barbeque, playing his trombone, sailing, watching TV, snow blowing, traveling, trucks, thunderstorms, airplanes, taking care of the lawn, woodworking, cars, his dogs Yukon and Winnie, swimming, driving, and baseball!
Family and friends have so many memories of Mick to cherish. He was most known for his incredible sense of humor, which he passed along to both his girls. He would wash airplanes for hours, enlisting the help of his girlfriend (who later became his wife of 45 years), just so he could have a 20 minute ride in Dad’s glider. He would wake the neighbors in the middle of the night to show them the northern lights or the alignment of the planets and invite them to come take a look through his 16” telescope. He had a fascination for driving anything that moved! He loved going to church and helping with communion and the Tuesday morning community breakfast. He sang in the church choir for 30 years to support his wife who happened to be the choir director. With his friends Jim and Janey in front of him, he would stand third in line for the next Star Trek movie on its first night’s showing. He would take his daughters beachcombing, with oohs and ahs for every stone or tiny piece of shell they found. He lost his best pair of sunglasses on the bow of the Diamond Princess while cruising the Fiordland National Park in New Zealand, and his Mariner’s hat shortly after. And if you were looking for him at any backyard barbeque, you’d find him manning the grill!
In the spring of 2017, Mickey was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia. He struggled with memory loss and confusion, but managed to continue living as normal a life as possible in his Spokane home until August of 2022, when he joined the residents at Willow Grove, a memory care facility in the Mead area. He is survived by his wife and two daughters, his brother and his family, and his sister. A service to celebrate Mickey’s life will be held at Audubon Park United Methodist Church at 3908 N. Driscoll Blvd. Spokane, WA on Saturday July 22nd at 1:00. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Audubon Park UMC Food Bank, Horizon Hospice, or the Lewy Body Dementia Association.
